BIOGRAPHY

After having grown up surrounded by nature and obsessed with Japanese culture, Ray Horacek studied Fine Art & Industrial Design at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI and Strate School of Design in Paris. In 2002 he immigrated to Tokyo, and he is currently a member of the Koganecho Artist in Residency program in Yokohama.

Horacek's work explores human beings' relationship with nature and with technology, with the algorithms that create us as well as the algorithms that we in turn create. He aims to enhance, augment, quantify, and repair the humanness in his subjects, while focusing on a removal of the ego in his organic process.

Focusing largely on portraiture, figurature, and abstraction, he employs a wide range of mediums in his explorations - from drawings, paintings, etchings, and screen prints to photography and interactive projections and installations. His research into the relationship between humans and technology has also extended into design for the body for companies including Puma, Reebok, Sony, and Soundbrenner.

Horacek has participated in 25 solo and group exhibitions around the world, and his work has been shown at the Instituto Tomie Ohtake in São Paulo, Poland Fashion Week in Lodz, Rokin75 in Amsterdam, and Noritake Garden Gallery in Nagoya. He is currently Guest Professor at Tama Arts University and previously at Meiji University.
